Settling In Again

Our house did not close at the end of September. Which is okay. I am fine with it. This is a great house and we’ve only been here 2 years. We decided to take it off the market, settle back in and look over our options again in 2008.

When it went under contract in July I began packing misc items. You know, things we never use. Pictures on the walls, books we’ve already read, home decor things. Last week I started unpacking those boxes and doing a sort of “spring cleaning” before putting anything back. So far I’ve deep cleaned the laundry room, kitchen, keeping room, and hall bath. I’ve cleaned out the fridge, pantry, and medicine cabinet, throwing away things that were expired. I went through each and every drawer and took inventory in this way: keep it, sell it, or throw it away.

It’s been great!!! My house looks wonderful and I feel good because I know it’s not just “surface clean”. You know, the kind of cleaning you do when you find out somebody is coming over and you have clutter all over the countertop so you throw it into a drawer. The room appears clean, but deep inside you know that drawer is about to bust open, spewing gum, coupons, bills, pens, aspirin, and cell phone chargers all over the floor!

Yesterday I went through several boxes that held a lot of picture frames. I noticed that many of the pictures were out dated. One frame contained a picture of a dog we don’t even have anymore! So I gathered them up and headed to the computer and printed updated pictures for those frames. And I’m so happy I did that. Every time I pass one now I’ll stop and admire the new look.

And as a matter of fact, a lot of my house has a new look. I am not putting things back where they used to be. I’m mixin’ it up a bit around here and it almost feels as if I went shopping. Today I am going to work on getting the office put back together and I can’t wait. For me, having a place for everything and everything in it’s place is equal to having all my stars aligned. All is right with the world. Even if it’s only my own little world. :)
