In our last BSF class for this year, the speaker started out talking about mules. Why mules??? Well, mules are hard workers. They are strong and courageous, and exhibit much endurance. They are a lot like many of the people we see today in church life. Dedicated. Sure-footed. Loyal.
But you know what else is unique about mules? They are sterile. Which lead her directly to this quote:
“The church today is filled with mules. Hard working, but not reproducing.”
Wow. Do you think that’s true?
Our study this week was on the last chapter of Matthew. This is where Jesus gives all of us, his followers, the “great commission”. Basically He did what He came here to do. He lived, taught, died, and was resurrected. Now it’s our turn.
Do you believe in His conception? What He taught? How He died and rose again? I mean, do you REALLY believe it??? All of it? Because if you don’t, what is the point of your faith?
And if you do believe it, then you’ve been commissioned to do a job while you are here on this earth. And the job is simple, really. It’s to tell others what you know about Jesus. What His word says. What He’s done in your life. How they can find Him too.
When Jesus was born they called his name Emmanuel, which means “God with us”. The very last thing that Jesus said to his disciples is at the end of Matthew 28:20. He says “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age”. God with us. Always.
I thought it was pretty neat that the lecture ended with that thought and when I got in the car to drive home, this song had just begun to play:
“God with Us” by Mercy Me (I just can’t make this stuff up, People!)
So go on and spread the news. Make disciples. Stop being a lowly ole worker mule. You don’t need to have a degree in the theology. You have God’s power IN you! Use it.
