Fire Safety Week
October 10th, 2008

Despite the sickness, and eventual ear infection, we had a good week in school. This was Fire Prevention Week so I thought it would be fun to really get into it. We have never sat down and made any kind of family escape plan so we did all of that.

We set the smoke detectors off so the kids would know what they sounded like and went over all the details like crawling on the floor, dialing 911, and the “don’t hide…run outside” rules.

Just discussing a possible house fire freaked Savannah out and she didn’t want to talk about it very long. But Emery had a blast acting out different fire scenerios. (I wonder if I should worry?) He also enjoyed (a little too much I might add) pretending like Mommy had fallen down and she couldn’t wake up. It sort of went along with the whole dialing 911 thing, so we just went with it. He kept saying, “Mommy, you be dead. I’ll call 911. Don’t worry.”

Encouraging words right there.

The highlight of the week was the day I took them to a local fire station to see the trucks. A friend of ours is a fireman and he said we were welcome to come in and look around. He also had a great fire safety video to show us.

little fireman

It was pouring down rain the day we picked to visit the station. This was good news because it meant Emery got to wear his fireman looking raincoat. But it was also bad news because 10 minutes into the fire safety video, our friend fireman Dave got called out to the scene of an accident and he took the really big firetruck with him!

  1. “You be dead. Don’t worry.” — That is so funny! Glad you had a good week. How’d you know it was fire safety week? Is there some home school calendar that lists stuff like this?

  3. I don’t know if you know this or not, but children aren’t usually awaken by the sound of the fire alarms. They do respond to the sound of your voice though. My sister in law had her alarm go off and her children are older and didn’t hear the alarm.

  4. So cute!!! My brother is a fireman and we have several pictures in the “big truck”. It’s always a treat to go to the station and see what they do.

Hope everyone is feeling better soon!

  5. That’s kinda cool to be at the station when an actual call came in! Sounds like you had a fun week. Emery reminds me so much of Colby - maybe that is why I love him so much and you seem to favor Colby:)
