You would think by the title of this post that my project had something to do with the holidays. Actually, it was something I told myself I MUST finish by New Years or I may never get around to doing it.
Over the summer Savannah asked me if she could have a big bed like Emery’s. (His crib converted to a toddler bed and eventually a full size bed. She had a twin. Back to my story…)
I had no intention of buying her a new bed but considered the idea of letting her move into the guest room which had my old queen size bed. My only hesitation was that the furniture in there is black. Not exactly what you picture in a little girl’s room. But one day I was out in the storage building and found a black, pink and green polka dotted comforter that we had used in a model home.
The wheels started turning.
I dug this old bookcase out of my garage. It was mine when I was a girl and ever since I moved out on my own I’ve used it to hold potting soil, pots, fertilizer and other gardening supplies. I thought if it was painted black, it would make a nice addition to Savannah’s “new” room.
So we painted it together. Me, the front and sides. Her, the back.
That was in August. Then came September, October, November and a bunch of promises that sounded something like “I know you have a black, pink and green polka dotted comforter, blue walls, and only half your clothes in here. I promise, even if it takes me until your birthday, I WILL repaint your room and finish moving you in”.
Poor thing. She was very patient. Even offered to move back into her old room. But I had plans. All I needed was some time.
Finally, a few days before her birthday I began the arduous task of covering these slate blue walls with pink. I knew it would be difficult but didn’t imagine it would take so many coats of primer to cover. Plus I tried to take one morning to do some ceiling repair and it ended up costing me 2 days!!! I should have left the dang spot alone!
I did most of the work myself but will give credit where credit is due. Jeremy is my lifesaver “cut in man”. He also made a great suggestion that changed my plan for pink and white striped walls. Instead we painted dark pink on two walls and light pink on the opposite.
I hadn’t planned on doing anything to her bathroom but the stripes idea was still fresh in my mind when I thought about how awesome it might look to use the same paint in her bathroom. I love how it turned out!
The project definitely took longer than I anticipated but I’m so happy with the results. Jeremy thinks it’s too pink, but I’m not sure that Savannah would agree. She’s been asking me to paint her door pink too! I can assure you that’s not going to happen!
