What about a stack of old/antique suitcases in graduated sizes stacked between the chairs for a table. Depending on the size, you'd only need 2 or 3. And if you weren't comfortable sitting things directly on the suitcase surface, top them with a wooden tray to contain things. Hope these ideas at least jump start your thought process...
