This is Savannah’s last week of summer vacation, so Nanny asked if she could hang out with her today. Since my kids are rarely separated, Emery was a bit lost without her this morning. After lunch I asked him if he wanted to bake some cookies with me.

Unfortunately I didn’t have any “place and bake” cookies, which are the only kind I make anymore. Does anyone really make them from scratch these days??? But I did have a couple of cake mixes, and my sister told me about a cake cookie recipe.

These cookies were super easy and fun to make. All we did is take one chocolate cake mix (you can use any flavor).

Add 1/2 cup of oil and 2 eggs, stirring until smooth. Roll into 1 inch balls and place on ungreased cookie sheet.

Put them into a preheated 350 degree oven for 8-10 minutes, and that’s it!!!

It’s a quick, simple recipe. Perfect for all your PMSing needs.

Being a Midwestern transplant, it didn’t take long to figure out these Southern folks take their BBQ seriously. Most importantly…Sloppy Joes are NOT BBQ sandwiches!!!!!!!!!!!!

I cannot stress that enough.

Geez!

Once I got my terminology straightened out, I began searching for a good BBQ recipe. Unfortunately my ribs still need a lot of work, but last year I found an awesome recipe for Pulled Pork Sandwiches over at Work It Mom.

Seriously, this crockpot recipe is so easy that it amazes me every time I make it. How does it turn out so darn good???

All you do is take a Boston Butt (which my kids think is hilarious, by the way…”Mom said butt!!!”), and put it in your crockpot. Cover it with 1/2 cup of water. Sprinkle with sea salt and ground pepper. Put the lid on, set it to low, and forget about the silly pork bottom for say, 10-12 hours.

At dinner time, use 2 forks to shred the meat. Then add your favorite BBQ sauce* (or serve it ON THE SIDE if you are fixin’ to feed a good ole boy), and ta da ~ Let’s eat!

*side note: if you click the link above you will find that Chris added her homemade BBQ sauce recipe to the Work It Mom site. I however do not feel the need to put forth the extra effort. Unless you count reaching down to the bottom shelf to buy the sauce that’s 2 for $3 at Publix this week as “extra effort”.

I surprised the kids this morning by making these Cream Cheese and Jelly Turnovers:

I found the recipe on Work It Mom and posted a condensed version on my other blog.

I was pleasantly surprised when I finished my devotional reading this morning and the only 2 “kids” I had to separate during quiet time were the cat and dog. Everyone was still asleep at 6:45. This is a miracle in my house! I almost didn’t know what to do with myself sans a child repeating, “can I haf sum bekfst…can I haf sum bekfst…can I haf sum bekfst…”

So I decided to try this recipe and give the family an alternative to cold cereal in a bowl. Sometimes with milk, sometimes without. Depends on who is preparing it and how hungry/impatient the recipient of such a bowl actually is.

I think they liked them, although they didn’t go crazy after them. The 2 that were left over are still sitting on the counter. They are very, very sweet. And next time, I will put a little less jelly in there. I’d like to taste more cream cheese. But give ‘em a try. Let me know what your family thinks.

As the weather warms up, one of the first changes we make is what’s for dinner. Comfortable evenings call for firing up the grill. And Jeremy is a fantastic “griller”! Lucky me!

I buy chicken or steaks or fish, and he works his magic with spices and seasonings and of course…Dale’s!

Along with the meat, I look forward to buying yummy fresh vegtables. Things we haven’t eaten all winter, like squash, zucchini, tomatoes, and even Vidalia onions. I wash and slice, and Jeremy throws a bit of flavor on them. They go on the grill too.

But it never fails that I have some left over. Too much to feel like I can throw it away, yet not enough to make another meal out of. What to do, what to do???

Do this:

Full recipe can be found here. It’s so good and not bad for you either. Our South Beach diet would frown upon the pasta, but I am pleased to get my family eating raw veggies.

It’s been one of those busy, fun days around here. Savannah and I decided to try a new recipe this morning for Summer Fruit Punch Salad.

There she is being oh so helpful. She used to help in the kitchen because she liked helping. Now she just wants to know when she can lick the bowl. The rest is too hard and too “boring”. Where did she learn that word anyways???

And speaking of recipes. I added another one to my Cooking Blog called Black Bean Salsa. I can’t believe I hadn’t done it before now because it’s one of my favorites. Eat it with tortilla chips or spoon it over grilled chicken breasts. Mmmmm…sooo goooood!

After making the jello we all went to Chick-fil-a where I was meeting someone to see if I could help her set up a Crown budget. She turned out to be just the sweetest person and the kids had a great time nibbling on their nuggets in between trips down the slide.

Before we got in the car I got each of them their complimentary ice cream cones (Did y’all know Chick-fil-a gives away kiddie cones??? I did not know this until recently, so I feel it’s my duty to get the word out). I thought the cold treat would keep Emery awake until I got home but about 2 miles from our house I looked back to see him fast asleep, with his half eaten ice cream cone upside down and melting all over the car seat.

I don’t know what it is about sleeping in the car for a few minutes that makes my kids think nap time is officially over, but I was determined to wear that little boy out somehow and get <del datetime="2008-05-08T20:10:32+00:00">my </del>his 2 hour nap in this afternoon. So I enlisted his help in washing my car.

Then, after eating our jello, I put the sleepy boy down for his nap and spent the last few hours making last minute preparations for a Ladies Tea at our church tonight. It is going to be so great! God has been in the details for this event and I will share more about that tomorrow. Until then….

I posted a new recipe on my other blog and wanted to share it here too. My friend Amy made this a few weeks ago when we were at their house watching the Dawgs pound Hawaii into the astroturf of the Louisiana Superdome. We finished dinner, cleaned up a little bit, then she pulled a few things out of her cabinets.

I couldn’t believe how quick and easy this recipe was. And it tasted sooooo good!!! I’ve made it once myself since that night, and I would have had a picture to go along with this post, but I couldn’t wait to dig in. So I guess that will have to wait until next time.

The name of the recipe is: Dump Cake.

The ingredients are: 20 oz crushed pineapple (in juice), 1 can cherry pie filling, 1 box yellow cake mix, 2 sticks of butter (melted)

What you do is: Spray 9×13 pan with cooking spray. Pour pineapple and cherry pie filling in. Top with yellow cake mix. Drizzle butter over all. Bake at 375 for 30-40 minutes, until nice and bubbly, and golden brown.

And that’s it! It comes out kinda like a cobbler, so it’s really good served warm with vanilla ice cream.

So go on over and have a peek at it. Hopefully by the end of the day I will have added a picture. That is if I can snap one before everybody eats these bad boys up! Mmmmm…mmmmm!
