Today I heard the most touching story from my housekeeper and I can’t help but share it. Marina only comes to my house once a month, but she is such a sweet thing, I enjoy seeing her when I get a chance. This morning was no exception.
She came into my kitchen holding 2 pictures. They were both of her daughter, Priscilla, when she was 7 years old. She had long, wavy brown hair, dark, sparkling eyes, and the most precious smile. “Oh, she’s beautiful”, I told her.
Marina looked lovingly at the photographs. “I’ve only recently been able to look at these”, she commented. She went on to tell me of the tragic accident that took her daughters’ life, only months after these pictures were taken.
She had 2 daughters that were walking along the side of the road that October day. They were exactly where their mother had given them permission to go. Suddenly an 18 wheeler came down the road traveling too quickly. The girls stayed on the shoulder of the road, but the force from the truck pulled Priscilla under the wheels, and pushed her sister into the ditch.
Priscilla was rushed to the emergency room and stayed in intensive care for a few days. Then she lost the fight here on earth and went on to Heaven. Marina told me that although the accident happend 9 years ago, it was only this past year that she was able to visit her little girl’s gravesite for the first time since the funeral.
It was at that time that Marina’s mother knew she was strong enough to handle seeing the artwork that Priscilla had drawn only a short time before her death. It is a colorful drawing, with lots of pink and blue hearts all over the page. There are “I love you’s” scattered among the hearts, written in a child’s handwriting.
In the very center of the paper is the biggest heart of all. And in the middle Priscilla wrote a note for her mother. It says, “I love you and I always did and we always will be togather. I love you very much I never whant to go away but I have to.”
It was almost as if she knew her time here was limited. Reading those words gave me goose bumps. And as I gave Marina a hug, I sniffled and fought back tears!
During the month of November, as we are reminded to be thankful, let’s be aware that none of us knows how limited our time on earth will be. Lord, thank you for allowing me to be a mom to these 2 precious children and a wife to Jeremy. I pray that we will have many, many years together to love each other and be a family. Amen
