This past weekend I took the kids to my mom’s house to cool off in the pool. Before we got in I announced to everyone that Emery would be skinny dipping since he had been suffering with a rather annoying diaper rash all week. I’ve heard that the sun and fresh air will do wonders for such a rash and I thought Saturday would be the perfect day to try it out.
With the mind numbing headaches joys of Savannah’s potty training days still etched forever fresh in my mind, I have not been pushing Emery to use the big boy potty. However, I quickly noticed that while in the pool with absolutely nothing on, he would climb to the top of the pool steps each time he had to pee pee, stick out his hoo-haa, and watch. Hmmm, a little intrigued I started tellling him, “No no, Emery, don’t pee in the pool. Let’s pee pee in the grass”.
And off we would go, standing in my parent’s yard, to pee in the grass. Then we would all cheer and clap and celebrate in ways that only people in the midst of potty training can fully understand.
But you know what? He loved doing it. So much so that he would run out of the pool every 5 or 10 minutes, yelling, “Watch me!!! Watch me!!!” And there he would tinkle. Only little bits at a time, because really he was going every few minutes.
So on Sunday I was trying to think of how I could keep up this routine. It’s still too hot here to keep the kids outside all day with the sole purpose of Emery peeing in the grass. I wondered if he might like the challenge of peeing on a Cheerio.
I got out the kids’ potty chair and placed a couple Cheerios inside. I asked Emery if he thought he could hit them and his eyes lit up! He gave it his best shot but he must have recently gone in his diaper, because just a few drops came out.
And then, in true boyish fashion, he reached down and ate the Cheerio.

And so it begins…the joy of boys and “conquering” things in their life! This is
jsut the beginning-have fun! Very creative.
That’s priceless! I’ve still got the chair that plays the “victory” tune if you want to borrow it!
You know, I’ve heard about the Cheerio thing and I’ve even told other moms about it. But I’m really glad to hear this version before Tyler’s old enough to try it! Good luck!
OMG that is too funny! You just never know what you’re going to get with boys!!! I love it!! he he!!!
That is SOOOO funny! I have girls so I didn’t get the experience of potty training a little man!
My husband got a kick out of it too.
and as the mom of two boys, thankfully long past this stage, I completely understand!!!!
Priceless!! That stage is so tiring! Ack!
I laughed out loud with that! Boys are too funny!
Too funny! My first reaction was ‘say it isn’t so.’ I thoroughly enjoy your writing style.
That is just hilarious!

That is hilarious!! I’ve heard that idea for using Cheerios, but I’ve certainly never heard of the child deciding to eat the Cheerio. Too funny!!
