From school this morning:
Savannah~
I’m working with her on lower case letters. She recognizes them, but does not like writing them. Everything is in caps, all the time. I found some worksheets that encourage writing in small letters by giving a set of 6 random 3 or 4 letter words, and below them are boxes. Each box corresponds with one of the words by having the same number of squares as letters, and the boxes are also tall, short, or long, depending on the shape of the letter that is supposed to go inside.
A lot of the words are sight words that she is not familiar with yet, so I was going over each of the words with her as we went along. We came across y.o.u. I went into the explanation, “y.o.u. spells you…like ‘how are you?’ or ‘I love you’…now, write you in the boxes below.”
She wrote “u”. I started laughing and she says, “What? That’s a u”.
Emery~
Teaching him his shapes is going to drive me to drink. We have shape puzzles, shape books, and shape toys. I try to talk about shapes with him all the time. But still, he calls everything a triangle. Personally, I think he just likes saying the word “triangle”. Because with a little prompting, and by the 2nd or 3rd attempt, he gets it right.
Today I was using flash cards with him. I asked, “What shape is this?”
He says, “It’s a triangle.”
“No, look again. What is it?”
“A shape.”
