We loaded up the family yesterday and headed to Holiday Park in the Everglades. Jeremy used to go to Holiday Park every spring when we first got married. He’d spend a week fishing with the guys. This time, we were going to take an air boat ride and learn a bit about the ‘glades.
The ride was fun and the water was beautiful. I learned several things: First, the Everglades are only 3-4 feet deep. Our captain told us if we fall in, don’t panic. Just stand up. Which is funny until you think of all the alligators in there. Then, by all means… PANIC …and jump back in the boat!
Second, all of south Florida used to be covered by water. Then someone got an idea to make canals to drain the water. The area the Everglades used to cover was enormous! From West Palm Beach to Miami and west to Ft Myers. Unbelievable!!! If the system they have in place to control the water ever fails, all of that space will flood. That’s cray-zee!!!
A little added bonus to our air boat ride was finding out that the Gator Boys themselves are located here as well. We’ve watched that show plenty of times, seeing them rescue Floridians from pesky gators and wrestle them just for fun, but on this day we got a live showing. Again… CRAY-ZEEEEEE! Who puts their face on an alligator snout????
Our two got a chance to hold a baby gator. One was a little more excited about it than the other. I’ll let you decide which was which. LOL…
