Savannah doesn’t like change much. And she doesn’t like to try new things unless she is certain, without a shadow of a doubt that she can do it. Because to try it and not be successful at the first attempt, to her is utterly humiliating and cause for a major meltdown!
That’s why it’s so important for her to have friends!
Because with friends, she just might take a teeny weeny step in a new direction. And even though she just might be a teensy weensy bit unsuccessful, if her friend is determined to keep trying, then she just might give it another try to. And oh my goodness, she just might have a good time!
On December 28th we were invited to go ice skating with some friends. Savannah has seen ice skating on TV and frequently “skates” on our hardwoods in her socks, but this was a lot different. She was excited about wearing real skates. I was excited because it was almost 60 degrees.
So the 2 of us got on our “real skates” and headed to the ice. It took me a while to find my balance but once I had it, I was able to pry her help her off the wall and encourage a little shuffling. She got mad at herself for falling until one time when she saw her friend Jaca fall too. She said in her best parental voice, “Don’t worry, Jaca. That’s how you learn.”
Gee, I wonder where she heard that before?
Mary Catherine was also a big support to Savannah. MC has been on the ice before and even has her own skates! Cool! I’m so happy Savannah has these friends to encourage her to get out and try new things. And I’m thrilled she liked skating so much that she keeps asking to go back and try again.
Yea Savannah! Way to go Girl!!!!!
